Vlade Divac humorously says he would swap himself for Kobe Bryant.

Time has a way of revealing truths. Recently, Vlade Divac, the former center for the Los Angeles Lakers, made a candid remark:

“If I were GM, I’d trade myself for Kobe Bryant.”

He delivered this line with a chuckle in Amazon Prime’s new documentary, “Jerry West: The Logo.” Yet, the statement carries the weight of more than two decades of basketball insight.

Back in 1996, Divac was a fan favorite for the Lakers. However, general manager Jerry West recognized potential in a scrawny, young, and untested 17-year-old from Philadelphia—Kobe Bryant.

West famously put Bryant through drills against Michael Cooper in Los Angeles, believing he had witnessed the future of the NBA that day.

This conviction led him to trade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets on draft day, in exchange for a teenager with no professional playing experience.

“Jerry saw it, I didn’t,” said Gary Vitti, a former Lakers athletic trainer, in the documentary. “I viewed a 17-year-old trying to mimic Michael Jordan, but he certainly wasn’t MJ.”

Divac was not happy about the move to Charlotte and fought against it. He felt blindsided by the trade, which is understandable.

“If you’re going to make a trade like that, it better be right,” remarked former Lakers guard and coach Byron Scott in the documentary.

In the end, West’s gamble paid off.

Kobe Bryant went on to become a superstar and is now considered one of the greatest players in NBA history, winning five championships and achieving global celebrity status.

Years later, as the general manager of the Sacramento Kings, Divac has a different perspective on the matter. The irony is not lost on him.

“At the time, I was upset and didn’t appreciate it,” Divac shared in a statement. “But I recognized that Jerry identified something that no one else had seen before. He made a wise choice.”
