Von Miller’s Name Slip Fuels Redskins Revival Discussion
NFL veteran Von Miller recently referred to his team by its former name, the Redskins, during a media session after a training camp practice. This slip came in the context of President Trump’s comments regarding the Washington Commanders’ stadium project, suggesting a return to the previous team name.
Miller, in his 15th NFL season, shared his evolving perspective on training camp. He remarked, “When you’re young, it feels like a hassle to attend OTAs. But after four months off—sitting on the couch—you just want to be back at it.” This reflection hints at his passion for the game and the changes that come with experience.
During the media talk, Miller expressed his eagerness to get back to work, stating that the “Redskins” reached out to him a month and a half ago, leading to his decision to join them about a week and a half prior.
Trump, through a Truth Social post, commented on the situation, saying, “If we can remove the ridiculous name ‘Washington Commanders’ without going back to ‘Washington Redskins,’ then there won’t be a deal for the stadium.” His remarks stirred conversation about the name change that took place in 2020.
On the other hand, Commanders’ General Manager Adam Peters emphasized the team’s focus on the upcoming season rather than the external debates about their name. He noted that their primary concern is preparing for what’s ahead.
A vote will take place on August 1 regarding a plan that could see the Commanders return to their former home at RFK Stadium, which includes a significant redevelopment project. If approved, the move back to D.C. from Maryland suburbs could happen around 2030.
The White House stated the President is serious about his comments on the team name, underscoring his interest in sports as a personal passion. It appears the discussion around the team’s identity is far from over.
