VooDoo Doughnut, the unique donut chain from Portland famous for its eccentric flavors, has quietly shuttered its Venice Beach store after just a year in operation.
Located at 66 Windward Avenue, the store seems to have closed its doors around June. Interestingly, the company website still features the Venice location, but the phone number is no longer in service.
This closing caught many locals off guard, especially those who enjoyed late-night visits for treats like the Voodoo Doll donuts and bacon maple bars.
Opened in June 2025, the Venice location quickly gained popularity among both tourists and night owls, leaving a noticeable gap for late-night dessert options in the area.
While the company still has multiple outlets in Portland and has expanded to various cities nationwide, the closure suggests that its venture in Venice didn’t last long.
This location marked the brand’s latest attempt to tap into the California market, following its initial Golden State shop, which debuted in 2017 at Universal CityWalk Hollywood.
Online reactions to the closure have been mixed. Some customers suggested a lack of local demand for donuts compared to chains like Dunkin’, while others pointed to increasing rental costs in the popular coastal area as a contributing factor.
“I guess there’s not a huge market for donuts in Venice,” one commenter noted. Another chimed in, “It’s like retail vacancies everywhere these days—it’s all about greed. Corporate owners are everywhere now, and that’s driving up prices.” Some even mentioned the need for rent control as a potential solution.
No official statement on why the store closed unexpectedly has been released, nor has it been confirmed if the brand intends to establish a presence elsewhere in West Los Angeles. Attempts to get clarification from staff about the closure were unsuccessful.
