Vice President Kamala Harris will not be involved in the debate about former President Donald Trump’s eventual running mate.

Harris dodged the vice presidential debate question in an interview with NBC News on Friday.

“I just finished the State of the Union address, and I’m so excited for what we accomplished last night and for the president,” Harris told NBC.

It is not unusual for the vice president to avoid this question. The question of whether anyone in the White House will go head-to-head with the Trump campaign this fall has long been an unanswered question.

The issue of President Biden’s health and mental well-being has been a long-standing concern for both Republicans and Democrats. Presidential debates have traditionally been viewed as an opportunity to evaluate candidates’ ability to think for themselves and speak under pressure.

Harris similarly declined to give a definitive answer Friday when asked whether Biden herself would debate Trump before the 2024 election.

“It’s going to get resolved eventually, and we’re going to deal with it,” Harris responded. “But the point is, right now, on this day after the State of the Union, I think the president has set the record straight for the American people in terms of what’s at stake. And I think he’s done an extraordinary job. I thought I did.”
