Vulnerable Democratic Representative Did Not Respond When Questioned About His Vote to Let Men Compete in Women’s Sports

Jared Golden Avoids Questions on Transgender Sports Policy

Democrat Representative Jared Golden from Maine faced scrutiny on Wednesday regarding his stance on allowing transgender men to compete in women’s sports, a situation captured in footage obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) pressed Golden, asking if he would apologize for his votes permitting men to compete in women’s athletics. His mixed voting history has caused some tension within the Democratic Party, especially considering his collaboration with former President Donald Trump, potentially making him a target in the upcoming Democratic primary in his district.

“Rep. Golden, do you apologize for repeatedly voting to allow men in women’s sports?” the NRCC questioned. “Why did you vote this way?” Yet, Golden did not respond to any of their inquiries.

Recently, Maine Democrats voted against HR 28, a bill aimed at interpreting Title IX to restrict biological men from participating in women’s sports. This legislation cleared the House of Representatives with unanimous Republican support and backing from two Democrats.

Golden also opposed a similar bill during the 118th Congress in April 2023 and had voted in favor of the Equality Act back in 2021.

In February, Golden appeared to shift his position, stating in an interview that “biological boys should not compete in sports with biological girls.” His statements came after a conflict between Trump and the Democratic governor of Maine over a state decision resisting the Presidential Order aimed at protecting women’s sports.

As he prepares for a challenging campaign ahead, Golden could face competition from state auditor Matthew Dunlap, who has expressed interest in running for his seat. Republicans are gearing up to hold Golden and other Congressional Democrats accountable for their previous votes on this contentious issue.
