WA Teacher Allegedly Told Teens Identifying as ‘Straight’ Is Offensive

Ian Gollash, a 10th grade ethnic studies world history teacher and self-identified communist, asked his students to fill out a “Social Identity Circle'' worksheet, according to a parent who requested anonymity. Students are asked to describe a variety of identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities, and sexual orientation. This worksheet is designed to teach students that their identity determines whether they receive unearned privilege or oppression.

The 15-year-old student reportedly wrote down that he was “straight,” but Golash didn't seem to like that.

The boy's mother reportedly shared an email with Lantz detailing what happened, and she is quoted in the email dated September 24, 2023.

When filling out the social identity wheel, he (her son) was told that if he identified as heterosexual, he should choose a less offensive term. It is completely inappropriate to dictate what terms students can and cannot use to identify themselves.

In response, Golash reportedly claimed that he had not targeted the teenager. And he said he made similar remarks to all the other students in the classroom at the time.
