The company's lawsuit, filed this week in the Southern District of New York, alleges that Perplexity is illegally using the company's copyrighted news content to power search queries for its artificial intelligence software.
“This lawsuit is brought by news publishers seeking relief against Perplexity's brazen scheme to free-ride on the valuable content publishers produce while simultaneously competing for readers,” the magazine said in its complaint. “It was done,” he said.
Perplexity AI has raised tens of millions of dollars with the goal of competing with Google in the search business.
The company faced backlash over the summer after it published summary news articles containing information and wording similar to the Forbes investigative article without citing or seeking permission from news outlets, the Associated Press reported.
News Corporation earlier this year signed a deal with OpenAI to license content for use in ChatGPT, another leading chatbot.
Perplexity did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment on News Corp's lawsuit.
