Walzing Matilda? Australia sees something familiar in Tim Walz | Tim Walz

hairAmara Harris’ new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, has had a whirlwind week, receiving recognition from a teacher, a military veteran, a football coach and now, a whole host of other people. The American politician who is most like an Australian prime minister.

When US Vice President Kamala Harris picked Waltz as her running mate, Australians immediately saw something familiar in him.

An Australian man living in New York shared the screenshot, pointing out that Waltz “looks Australian.”

Some wondered why he felt that way: what on earth made this grey-haired 60-year-old man seem like he belonged to one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse peoples in the world?

That’s right: he was a combination of the last two prime ministers, Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese.

However, another person pointed out that this applied to all Liberal Party prime ministers, not just the past two.

And then I was struck: it wasn’t just one side of politics: Walz seemed like four of the last five prime ministers, two of whom were Labor leaders.

And if you really think about it, Walz resembles five of the last seven Australian prime ministers, two of whom are Kevin Rudd, who is probably the most similar to Walz anyway, or six of the last eight, going all the way back to John Howard.

Local news organization Crikey Waltz said it was “The Oz Code.” He looked “very Australian” and “eerie”, a reflection of the national character. WrittenBut what exactly is it?
