Incarcerated Man Pleads Not Guilty to Arson Charges

On Monday, Chamel Abdulkarim, 29, denied multiple arson charges related to a significant fire at a warehouse in Ontario, California, despite video evidence that allegedly shows him igniting the blaze. This warehouse, operated by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, spans a massive 1.2 million square feet.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office reports that Abdulkarim, a resident of Highland, is facing seven counts of arson, including one count of aggravated arson for starting multiple fires within the facility last Tuesday.

Authorities noted that he not only recorded the incident but also posted the videos on social media, which served as crucial evidence for his arrest and prosecution.

Federal prosecutors describe Abdulkarim as a radical who may have aimed to send a political message with the fire. They draw comparisons between his actions and the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

In court documents, it was stated that Abdulkarim reached out to a woman post-incident, equating his actions to those of another individual, expressing that many would sympathize with his motives. This notion seems to be underscored by videos where he can be heard saying, “I just need to pay you enough to live,” while lighting a fire.

Abdulkarim reportedly stated, “All you had to do was pay us enough to live on. Pay us more for the value we bring. Not the companies. You didn’t see the shareholders choosing to shift,” expressing his discontent with the company’s practices. He also claimed, “We just cost these motherfuckers billions,” indicating his belief in the justification of such drastic action.

The consequences of the fire were severe, with damages estimated at around $500 million. The firefighting effort involved about 175 firefighters working to quench the flames. While approximately 20 employees were present during the incident, there were no reported injuries.

Initially unaccounted for amid the chaos, Abdulkarim was arrested on Tuesday while the fire raged on. As investigations reveal more about the planned attack, he now faces both state and federal charges.

U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri commented on this increasing trend, particularly among younger individuals drawn into radical ideologies, highlighting the concerning nature of this case.
