Emergency Response in New Jersey After Roof Collapse
An extensive emergency response was triggered in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on Monday when severe weather led to a portion of the roof at a BJ’s Wholesale Club collapsing, which trapped several people inside.
Emergency personnel arrived at the BJ’s located on Route 35 in Ocean Township shortly after 11:15 a.m. local time, following reports of the roof’s collapse, as stated by the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.
Eye-opening video footage has surfaced, showing shoppers calmly inspecting their groceries mere moments before the roof fell in and inundated the store.
Authorities noted there were 27 individuals inside the building at the time, but fortunately, no injuries have been recorded.
The two individuals who were partially trapped under debris managed to extricate themselves and safely exited the facility.
According to the sheriff’s department, specialized rescue teams were dispatched to carry out primary and secondary searches, ensuring no one was left inside the compromised structure.
An internal drone from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, along with a K-9 team from New Jersey City Urban Search and Rescue, conducted a search of the damaged building.
Monmouth County Sheriff Sean Golden commended first responders for their coordinated efforts amidst challenging weather conditions and ongoing flooding in the area. “This incident highlights the rapid danger that severe weather can impose,” Golden remarked.
Police Chief Michael Sorrentino of Ocean Township urged residents and drivers to steer clear of the vicinity as emergency operations continued. Travelers were advised to avoid Route 35, Park Avenue, and Deal Road, particularly along the stretch between Routes 18 and 35.
