Warner Bros Discovery is reversing its earlier decision about the Max streaming platform’s branding, reinstating the HBO name that was omitted two years ago.
This summer, the company will rebrand its streaming service as HBO Max, hoping that the recognition of the HBO name will boost subscriber numbers while it expands internationally.
The return to HBO Max symbolizes a commitment from WBD to provide unique and high-quality content. HBO is known for blockbuster series like “Game of Thrones,” “The Sopranos,” and “True Detective.”
CEO David Zaslav emphasized this move, stating, “We are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”
The switch to remove HBO from HBO Max in 2023 followed WBD’s strategy to combine HBO’s popular dramas and franchises, like “Harry Potter,” with content from Discovery, focusing on a broader lifestyle approach.
The intention was to create a more attractive product to retain consumers, particularly those who tend to cancel their subscriptions after binge-watching a series. However, this decision was met with considerable backlash.
Even Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos expressed surprise at the change, remarking, “I would have never guessed HBO would have gone away. They put all that effort into one thing that they can tell the consumer – it should be HBO,” in a March interview.
As cable TV continues to decline due to cord-cutting, streaming has become a crucial growth area for WBD. Popular shows like “The White Lotus” and “The Pitt” contributed to a gain of 5.3 million streaming subscribers in the first quarter of the year, bringing the total to 122.3 million. The company anticipates surpassing 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.
A significant component of this expansion is their international outreach. After launching Max in more than 70 countries last year, WBD plans to introduce the service in the UK, Ireland, Italy, and Germany.
