Warner Bros Discovery Rebrands Streaming Service Back to HBO Max
Warner Bros Discovery is making a significant change by reverting its streaming platform’s name back to HBO Max, a name it let go two years ago.
This summer, the company plans to reintroduce HBO Max, hoping that the recognizable brand will help attract more subscribers, especially as its global presence grows.
According to Warner Bros Discovery, bringing back the HBO branding signifies a commitment to providing unique, high-quality content. HBO is celebrated for its premium programs, boasting critically acclaimed series like “Game of Thrones,” “The Sopranos,” and “True Detective.”
“Today, we’re reinstating HBO, a brand synonymous with top-tier media quality, which we believe will enhance growth in the coming years,” stated CEO David Zaslav on Wednesday.
Previously, in 2023, WBD had decided to remove HBO from the HBO Max name, merging various franchises, including HBO dramas and lifestyle content from the Discovery service. The intent was to create a more compelling offering to retain viewers who had canceled subscriptions after recent season finales of popular shows.
However, this move faced considerable backlash from the audience.
Even Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, labeled the decision surprising, commenting, “I never thought HBO would vanish. They invested a lot into a single message for consumers. It should have been HBO,” during an interview with Variety earlier this year.
Streaming has emerged as a crucial growth area for WBD, particularly as traditional cable TV struggles with the trend of cord-cutting.
Programs like “The White Lotus” and “The Pitt” contributed to an increase of 5.3 million streaming subscribers from January to March, raising the total to 122.3 million. The company anticipates its subscriber count will surpass 150 million by the end of 2026.
A key factor in this growth has been international expansion. After launching Max in over 70 countries last year, WBD plans to introduce services in the UK, Ireland, Italy, and Germany soon.
