The widow of renowned corporate activist Evelyn Y. Davis has called for CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour to be dismissed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. This plea follows Amanpour’s controversial remark suggesting Israeli hostages were “treated better” than Palestinians in Gaza. The widow, along with other investors, deems Amanpour’s apology inadequate.
In a pointed letter sent to Mr. Zaslav, investor Mr. Patterson referenced his late wife’s advocacy, urging for Amanpour’s removal due to her statements, which he describes as anti-Semitic. He noted, “We, as shareholders of WBD, ask you to act against Christiane Amanpour for her comment implying a disparity in treatment that is offensive and unjust.”
Patterson labeled the remarks as offensive not just to survivors of the Holocaust but also to those fighting against terrorism, asserting that Zaslav’s inaction would reflect an agreement with Amanpour’s “vile statements.”
Following the remarks aired on October 13—on the day Hamas released its remaining 20 hostages due to a U.S.-led ceasefire—Patterson expressed his outrage. He criticized Amanpour’s description of the hostages, claiming that such views promote animosity towards Jews and harm CNN’s reputation.
Although Amanpour later expressed regret for her comments, citing her horror at the experiences of hostages, Patterson remained unconvinced. He maintained that her statements were inflammatory and accused her of fostering ideas that trivialize the terrorist attacks on October 7.
Patterson, who holds approximately 300 shares of Warner Bros. Discovery stock, has previously urged Zaslav to consider selling CNN. His late wife, a Holocaust survivor known for challenging corporate leaders at shareholder meetings, deeply influenced his views on accountability and transparency.
In addition to critiquing Amanpour’s commentary, Patterson pointed out that her previous statements had drawn similar backlash, questioning how much discord Zaslav is prepared to tolerate. He stated, “Amanpour’s ongoing remarks regarding these events are prejudicial and merit immediate dismissal.”
As an established journalist at CNN for decades, Amanpour has faced scrutiny in the past for her views on Israel and Palestine. Critics, including pro-Israel organizations, have claimed that her reporting often leans towards a bias against Israel. Despite this, Amanpour asserts her commitment to truth, engaging with criticisms as a reflection of her approach rather than admitting to partiality.
The situation remains fluid as stakeholders demand action, while the broader implications of Amanpour’s comments are still being debated. The Post has attempted to reach both CNN and WBD for their input on this unfolding issue.
