Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) praised President Biden on Sunday after the president’s State of the Union address and criticized former President Trump, who spent the campaign worrying about himself and legal dilemmas.
“Joe Biden is tried, tested and true. He’s seen this nonsense before,” Warnock said in an interview with Kristen Welker on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” . “He saw and experienced it the other night when the other side was heckling him in the middle of the president’s speech. And he kept pushing because he wasn’t focused on himself.”
“Unlike his challenger, he is not focused on what this election means to him as Donald Trump escapes from prison,” he continued. “He’s focused on what this election means for the American people, the people of Georgia. And he spoke powerfully last night about the future.”
In Thursday’s State of the Union address, Mr. Biden focused on policy outcomes and goals and painted a positive picture for re-election, while attacking Mr. Trump for worrying only about himself.
The speech received a warm reception from Democrats as the general election season gets into full swing and Biden ramps up his attacks on Trump. The president also made it clear that the stakes are high heading into the 2024 election.
“Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under attack like they are today here at home,” Biden said in his speech. “What is unusual about our time is that freedom and democracy are under simultaneous attack at home and abroad.”
Trump faces multiple criminal charges, including two federal lawsuits, alleging he mishandled classified documents and acted to overturn the 2020 election results.
