Warren Backs Mamdani for NYC Mayor

Senator Elizabeth Warren has expressed her support for Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist running for mayor of New York City.

During a press conference on Monday, Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, praised Mamdani’s commitment to making life more affordable for city residents. However, she didn’t discuss any potential new taxes that could impact voters as part of his campaign strategy.

“We are a party that fights for affordable prices for working families,” Warren stated.

Warren also commented on Andrew Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York, now running as an independent, noting that he seemed surprised by Mamdani’s priorities, which align more closely with the public’s needs.

She took the opportunity to critique both Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams, suggesting that they prioritize the interests of wealthy donors over everyday citizens.

“If anyone thinks New York City should work just for billionaires, they should probably go with Andrew Cuomo,” she asserted. “But anyone who believes it should serve the working families who wish to live and thrive in this city should get behind Zoran.”

Warren emphasized her point by giving Mamdani a supportive tap on the back.

Mamdani also has received backing from other prominent leftist figures, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.

In his campaign, the 33-year-old candidate proposed a plan to offer taxpayer-funded childcare for all NYC children aged six weeks to five years, arguing that the high cost of childcare is pushing families out of the city, just behind housing costs.

“It’s not only a crisis for families and their children, but also for the workers who care for those kids,” he elaborated.

While progressive Democrats largely support Mamdani’s ideas, more centrist members of the party are treading carefully. Concerns have been raised by politicians like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, particularly regarding Mamdani’s previous remarks related to pro-Palestinian slogans and his past support for police refunds.

Schumer criticized such slogans, acknowledging their potential to incite violence, while also expressing regret over Mamdani’s claims that Israel is committing genocide, calling such accusations “painful, cruel, unfair and vicious.” Nonetheless, Schumer praised Mamdani’s campaign as “impressive” and recognized shared views on several issues, but stopped short of fully endorsing him.
