Warriors contain Jonathan Kuminga, but Hawks still prevail

Warriors vs. Hawks: A Disappointing Reunion

About two months ago, the Warriors and Hawks made a trade, yet in their first match since then, the key players involved hardly made an impact.

So much for the much-anticipated “Revenge Game” for Jonathan Kuminga!

Kristaps Porzingis was wearing street clothes, and Buddy Hield only participated during garbage time. Kuminga, in limited minutes off the bench, struggled significantly as the Warriors faltered in the second half, ultimately losing 126-110.

Before the game, Hawks star Jalen Johnson was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. However, Kuminga had a rough outing, missing his first seven shots. Dyson Daniels, stepping up in place of Johnson, impressed everyone with a standout performance, racking up 28 points.

What It Means

The loss left the Warriors at 33-38, marking their first time falling five games under .500 since they were 19-24 two seasons ago. This slump is reminiscent of an injury-riddled 2019-20 season that ended badly for them. The team has been struggling, losing 10 out of their last 12 games, which has now dropped them to the tenth position in the West.

Turning Point

The Warriors’ second half began disastrously: five turnovers, two missed shots, and only one field goal, quickly turning a 63-61 lead into a double-digit deficit. They controlled the first half but came out flat after halftime, allowing Atlanta to explode for 39 points in that quarter.

MVP: Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Fans may question the performance of Kuminga against his former team, as his only score came late in the game when the Hawks were already ahead by more than 20. With a dismal 1-of-9 shooting, it was a tough outing. Meanwhile, Hield has seen limited action since the trade, while Porzingis, sidelined by a back injury, has played as many games for the Warriors as Kuminga has for Atlanta—seven.

Game Stats: Plus-143 vs. Minus-88

Despite injuries on both sides, the starting fives of each team were able to compete early on, but Atlanta’s starters took control in the third quarter, as reflected in their impressive plus/minus stats.

Looking Ahead

Next up for the Warriors is a matchup against the Mavericks on Monday, as they seek their second win in six games. By then, we may get an update on Stephen Curry’s status following a scrimmage as he eyes the remaining 11 games of the regular season.
