Warriors struggle against Cavs in what may be Curry's final game absence

Warriors’ Season Defined by “What If?”

SAN FRANCISCO — The recurring question for the Warriors this season has been “What if?” They faced a major challenge once again, leading one of the NBA’s top teams but ultimately falling short, all while their star player was sidelined in street clothes.

The Warriors couldn’t muster enough firepower to shake off the Cavaliers, who, playing their third game in four nights, managed to score 18 of the final 29 points in a 118-111 loss.

On the bright side, it seems Stephen Curry is set to return on Sunday, which might alleviate some of the uncertainty. Despite a strong effort, the Warriors struggled without him, marking their 18th loss in 27 games this season.

Guy Santos had a solid game with 25 points, while Brandin Podzemski chipped in 23 points, including some crucial three-pointers. However, the Warriors found it tough to counter the effective plays from James Harden and Donovan Mitchell.

Cleveland shot 44.4 percent from beyond the arc and 51.2 percent overall, with Max Strus hitting six threes for a total of 24 points, taking advantage of 15 turnovers from the Warriors.

Current Implications

At this point, the Warriors seem to have little control over the Western Conference standings. Their focus now shifts to integrating Curry back into the lineup during the final five games of the season.

The loss put them at 36-41, ensuring they will finish below .500 for the second time in coach Steve Kerr’s 12 seasons.

Turning Point in the Game

Things shifted dramatically when Dennis Schroder committed a hard foul on L.J. Cryer early in the fourth quarter. This foul ignited both the crowd and the Warriors as they rallied back from a 94-87 deficit.

The Warriors surged with three technical free throws from Cryer and two three-pointers from Podzemski that culminated in a 9-0 run, giving them a 98-94 lead with just under eight minutes to play.

In a whirlwind of calls, there were three technicals and one questionable decision in less than half a minute, intensifying the game’s energy.

Although the Cavs had established big early leads, the game remained competitive from that point onward.

MVP: Guy Santos

Santos’ clutch corner three-pointer with under four minutes left put the Warriors ahead 103-100. He appeared unfazed by the pelvic strain that kept him out in a previous game.

However, that would be the Warriors’ last lead, as Mitchell responded quickly with a three of his own. The Cavs outscored Golden State 16-8 in the closing minutes.

Game Status and Player Performance

The Warriors had previously rested several players against the Spurs, including Kristaps Porzingis, De’Anthony Melton, Gui Santos, and Gary Payton II, making them available for the matchup against the Cavs.

These four players collectively contributed 54 points during the game, although Melton struggled with only five points from 2 of 12 shooting.

Looking Ahead

With Curry potentially back in the lineup next time out, there’s optimism. He has missed 27 consecutive games due to runner’s knee and will be reevaluated ahead of the game against the Rockets at home on Sunday. If all goes well, this could mark his first appearance since January 30th.
