Division One

Chelmsford: Essex 27-3 vs Yorkshire 216

Trent Bridge: Notts 333 vs Hampshire 2-0

Hove: Sussex 284 vs Worcestershire 7-0

Edgbaston: Warwickshire 364-4 vs Surrey

Division Two

Canterbury: Kent vs Glamorgan 389-7

County Ground: Northamptonshire 238 vs Lancashire 110-3

There was quite a back-and-forth at Trent Bridge, with Nottinghamshire’s 20-year-old England Lion, Freddie McCann, scoring a brilliant century—his third in the Championship. Kyle Abbott achieved five wickets for the 43rd time in his career, but, interestingly, Hampshire managed to drop five catches.

2024 champions, Warwickshire, had a challenging day at Edgbaston. Tom Latham, who arrived in Birmingham on Tuesday after recovering from a broken hand, struck an unbeaten 139 in his debut for Warwickshire. Alex Davies set the pace early on against Surrey, hitting a couple of sixes before he was bowled by a full toss from Dan Lawrence. With Jamie Smith and Ollie Pope absent due to England commitments, Surrey saw Jason Roy return for the first time in five years.

It was a noteworthy day for off-spinner Jack Carson at Hove, as he celebrated a maiden first-class century. Sussex, who had been looking strong at 80 for none, quickly stumbled, losing six wickets for just eight runs, largely thanks to Tom Taylor’s impressive five for 56. The last-wicket partnership of 73 was particularly frustrating for Worcestershire.

In Chelmsford, Yorkshire’s James Wharton managed to hold the team together with a careful 63 not out, on a pitch that seemed to switch sides quickly, with Yorkshire having lost nine wickets for just 108 runs. Matt Critchley picked up four for 49. Essex ended their innings by losing their openers and the nightwatchman before close of play.

Glamorgan had a solid day against Kent in Canterbury, bolstered by the news that Marnus Labuschagne is set to return for two matches later this month. The young Asa Tribe was bowled by Matt Parkinson just six runs shy of his first Championship century, while Ben Kellaway remained unbeaten on 91.

In a tense match at the County Ground, Northamptonshire was reduced to 67 for six, but the last four batters managed to contribute 171 runs—a point of contention for Lancashire. Lewis McManus made a noteworthy half-century, supported by Liam Guthrie and the tail. Despite losing both George Bell and Josh Bohannon for naught, Marcus Harris’s steady fifty helped smooth things out for Lancashire.
