Diversity, equity, and inclusion “DEI” policies will face increased scrutiny in 2024, with at least a dozen major U.S. companies and hundreds of universities announcing that these once-innocent efforts I have decided to withdraw it.
“I think it was inevitable,” conservative activist Robbie Starbuck told Fox News Digital about the backlash against DEI this year after its popularity soared four years ago.
“In 2020, a lot of executives bought into this whole idea and concept of DEI because they didn't want to be seen as racist,” he said. “Many of them had no concept or understanding of what it would be like.”
DEI has been criticized by conservatives as divisive and discriminatory, often prioritizing race, gender, and sexuality in hiring, training, and programming. DEI advocates say these efforts address racial disparities and provide support to historically marginalized groups.
Major companies that will phase out DEI in 2024
This year's move to move the private sector away from DEI comes as companies face increasing pressure from Starbucks and other conservatives to reconsider these policies.
American Airlines became the latest U.S. company to agree to end its diversity hiring practices this month following a lawsuit from the conservative watchdog group America First Legal.
“The airline has acknowledged that its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) recruiting and hiring practices violate federal law and equal employment opportunity,” the AFL said in a statement.
Walmart, the nation's largest retailer and private employer, also confirmed in November that it would take steps to withdraw from DEI. These changes include removing sexual and transgender products from online marketplaces from third-party sellers that are inappropriately marketed to children, and ending our participation in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index. It will be.
In a statement to FOX Business, Walmart said it was “ready to change alongside our employees and customers across the nation.”
“We're on a journey and we know we're not perfect, but every decision we make fosters a sense of belonging and opens doors of opportunity for every employee, customer and supplier, and we strive to help Walmart “It comes from the idea that we want to be for everyone,” the company said.
At least 10 other U.S. companies also announced DEI initiatives earlier this year, including Ford, Lowe's, Boeing, Caterpillar, Harley-Davidson, Polaris, John Deere, Tractor Supply Company, Jack Daniels, and Molson Coors. It is reported that it has been reduced in size.
Other companies with large corporate presences in the U.S., such as Nissan and Toyota, have also agreed to eliminate many DEI practices toward the end of 2024.
Starbuck, who led campaigns against “woke” policies at Walmart and several other companies, believes people began to complain about DEI privately about two years ago. But in 2024, he said, it will be more socially acceptable for people to say out loud that these policies are “harmful.”
“This was a year where people were socially allowed to talk about it and acknowledge it in different ways. Every time a company goes bankrupt, more people feel comfortable admitting that they're the problem. Starbuck told FOX News Digital.
Universities retreat from DEI as pressure mounts
DEI is also being implemented at universities across the United States.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, which tracks DEI elimination in higher education, 215 college campuses in 32 states have changed their DEI policies.
Public universities in several states have closed their DEI offices after lawmakers passed or introduced bills that would ban state funding for DEI.
After the Florida Board of Governors permanently banned the use of taxpayer funds to fund DEI programs in state schools in January, the University of Florida has reinstated all employees in DEI positions to comply with the new regulations. I was fired.
The University of Texas at Austin also closed its DEI office to comply with a new state law banning DEI offices at public universities. Anti-DEI legislation signed by Governor Abbott in 2023 also restricts universities from using diversity statements in recruiting and training.
Alabama, Iowa and Utah also followed Texas and Florida this year in banning DEI offices at public universities, according to Inside Higher Ed.
Kansas and Idaho also passed laws prohibiting public institutions from requiring diversity representation in hiring and admissions decisions.
Boise State University became one of the latest schools to close its equity center on Nov. 29, followed by the University of Michigan in December, which eliminated DEI statements as part of faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure requirements.
DEI still has strong control over most of America's top companies
A recent report from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, found that while some top companies will withdraw from DEI in 2024, most of the nation's largest companies still maintain some form of commitment to DEI. That's what it means.
Heritage examined the corporate statements, annual reports, and other public documents of all Fortune 500 companies and found that 485 of the top 500 companies continue to make DEI a priority.
British carmaker Jaguar is one company that has doubled down, especially after its recent rebranding faced criticism that it was taking the brand in a “woke” new direction.
Starbuck knows the fight against “woke” ideology in America's top companies is far from over.
He predicted that some companies would “do the right thing” by disbanding DEI, while others would try to quietly reinstate it under a different name.
“We have work left to do to institutionally strip away the wiring and foundations here, because a lot of this stuff is deeply embedded in our society in ways that most people don't even understand. body,” he said.
“DEI is a wounded animal, so we expect a desperate operation from those pushing this forward,” he continued. “But that means we are at the beginning of its death.”
