Washington Monument to Celebrate 250th Anniversary as a Birthday Candle
A national organization called Freedom 250 has announced that the Washington Monument will be transformed into “the world’s tallest birthday candle” this New Year’s Eve. This event aims to mark the country’s 250th anniversary. The monument will feature illuminating projections that highlight key moments in American history, particularly its founding and future aspirations, starting at 7 PM ET on Wednesdays. As part of the countdown to 2026, the monument will resemble an 80-meter-tall birthday candle.
Keith Clack, the CEO of Freedom 250, shared in a press release, “The lighting of the Washington Monument begins a significant year for our nation: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We invite all Americans and friends of America to join us in this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”
Freedom 250, a bipartisan group formed under President Donald Trump, is responsible for organizing events to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, collaborating with the White House and other federal bodies.
The public is welcome to attend this free viewing, which will run until Monday with various projections displayed on the monument each night. The events on New Year’s Eve will start and continue past midnight, with the display from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM ET the following evening. Video narrations at the site will cover topics like Discovery, the American Revolution, Western Expansion, the Industrial Revolution, and the U.S.’s modern and future prospects.
Freedom 250 describes the event as the “first symbolic moment” in a series of celebrations leading up to the anniversary, including a drone and fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. Testing for the event started earlier in December, allowing a preview of what’s to come.
Additional events planned by Freedom 250 for America’s birthday include the Great American State Fair in June and a parade of ships representing over 30 countries in New York Harbor on Independence Day.
Moreover, America250, a bipartisan committee established by Congress in 2016 for the anniversary preparations, will hold its celebrations in New York on New Year’s Eve. Following midnight ET, the Times Square Ball will be relit in red, white, and blue, and around 2,000 pounds of confetti in those colors will be released into the air.
