Washington Monument to Celebrate 250th Anniversary
It’s going to be quite the event.
The Washington Monument will light up like a massive birthday candle for New Year’s Eve, kicking off a year-long commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. This initiative, called Freedom 250, is a nonprofit that President Trump launched recently to lead the celebrations.
Beginning Wednesday, the monument will showcase patriotic projections that recount moments from American history, according to Keith Clack, CEO of Freedom 250. “This illumination signifies the start of an important year for our nation: 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed,” he remarked.
Clack also encouraged all Americans and allies of the U.S. to take part in this historic celebration of the American spirit.
This week, Freedom 250 initiated tests for the light show. One of the early projections featured “250” alongside the colors of the nation’s first president’s monument. A representative noted that attendees can look forward to seeing reenactments like George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware and Columbus’s journey to the New World.
Every night until January 5th, the Washington Monument will display a “comprehensive visual narrative” of the nation’s history, with various projections illuminating its facade.
When the exhibition kicks off, there will be an enormous birthday candle along with a New Year’s countdown visible from the monument. Freedom 250 plans to cap off the night with a “massive fireworks display” at midnight, aiming to create a shared experience for all Americans.
This event is just the first in a series of significant national celebrations organized by Freedom 250. Other anticipated events include the Great American State Fair in June, a National Assembly of Prayer in May, and the Patriot Games in the fall. There are even whispers of constructing a grand Arc de Triomphe across the Potomac and possibly hosting UFC matches on the White House grounds.
