Medical School Accused of Concealing DEI Commitment
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis faces allegations of attempting to obscure its dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by relocating its DEI office to a more restricted area. This move comes even as the Trump administration intensified scrutiny on such efforts.
America First Legal asserts that the university “failed to dismantle illegal ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ policies” and instead “hid a DEI office on a restricted floor.” According to the group’s findings, the DEI office is shifting from a visible location on the first floor of the North Medical Building to the 12th floor of the Mid-Campus Center, which they describe as a “restricted-access floor omitted from the university’s official floor plan.”
In conversations with FOX News Digital, America First Legal insisted that this investigation is vital to uncovering the truth about the university’s practices.
Calls for Audits on K-12 DEI Measures
Redshaw, a legal expert from the organization, expressed concern over the university’s actions, suggesting that they are not only maintaining their DEI programs but are also doing so in a manner that disregards established laws. “They convened a committee to rebrand these initiatives, essentially keeping them alive under different terminology,” she noted. This committee was introduced earlier this year as the Inclusive Excellence Advisory Committee, and the university claims it serves to support various community members while adhering to federal guidelines.
As the Trump administration’s executive orders cast a shadow over DEI efforts, many universities are finding their federal funds at risk. Hild, from consumer research, suggested that these institutions won’t relinquish their DEI efforts easily and are likely to begin rebranding them to sidestep the legal challenges.
Washington University has historically been criticized for what many label a “woke” agenda. Reports suggest it has promoted controversial viewpoints on topics such as body mass index and has faced backlash for its teachings and debates around critical race theory.
In late September, America First Legal took further action by filing a civil rights lawsuit. They claim the Justice Department is now involved in probing what they describe as a “systemic and illegal DEI framework.”
Federal Funding and Legal Oversight
Moreover, an inquiry revealed significant taxpayer funding—over millions—directed by the Biden administration towards university projects that allegedly embed racial quotas and ideological training into medical education. Redshaw pointed out that such actions reflect a blatant disregard for Supreme Court rulings and federal civil rights laws.
America First Legal is determined to hold Washington University and others accountable, insisting that equal protection under the law is paramount. Meanwhile, repeated requests for comments from the university have gone unanswered.
Gene Hamilton from America First highlighted the seriousness of the situation, declaring that educational institutions must adhere to legal mandates that prevent racial discrimination. He warned that any violation of this principle could lead to significant legal repercussions.
