A motorist was rescued from a violent car fire this week thanks to quick police action.
The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office told the Newnan Times Herald the incident happened in Sharpsburg just after 3 a.m. Thursday. At least two police officers joined the rescue effort.
according to FOX 5 Atlanta, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Stephen Mills arrived at the scene of the accident and found the SUV on fire. The car ran off the road, hit a tree, and burst into flames.

Body camera footage showed Mills breaking the car window and discovering a man trapped in the driver’s seat. Officers also reportedly cut the seatbelt and forced the man out of the car’s back window.

Eventually, Mills and another deputy were able to rescue the driver in the nick of time as the fire continued to grow.
Sheriff Len Wood told FOX 5 that Mills was humble about the incident and was only informed of his actions by firefighters.
“This incident highlights the critical need for proper tools and training,” Wood said. “Thanks to our recent investment, Sergeant Mills was able to save lives.”

According to the Times Herald, Coweta Fire Chief Robbie Flanagan praised the firefighters’ resourcefulness during the stressful situation.
“I would like to thank law enforcement and commend them for their quick action,” Flanagan said. “Public Safety had great teamwork and undoubtedly saved his life.”
