Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary Scott Turner visited Eton Fire Destruction in Altadena on Thursday, where he discussed his recovery efforts with LA County supervisor Kathryn Berger.
At a press conference outside Fair Oaks Burger, Breitbart News, one of the few businesses that miraculously survived the fire, was on the scene and asked the secretary what he could offer to restore Altadena to its historic character.
“What's unique about Altadena is that it's a historic neighborhood. The architectural gems have just come up with smoke and the reconstruction process. Can you guarantee that the neighborhood still retains its character, especially for those who are currently feeling pressured to sell their land?” asked Paul Bois, a reporter for Breitbart News.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner said the people of Altadena had shown enormous determination in the wake of the disaster, highlighting their persistence to prevent neighbours from losing their character.
As I said before, people's resolve is extremely encouraging to me. I played professional sports and separating a great team from a great team was a matter of determination, how to overcome adversity in a particular game or situation, and how I overcome the challenges.
“But we won't stop. There's no attitude to give up here. There's no attitude to the victim here,” he continued. “There's a victory attitude here. That encourages me.”
The secretary said efforts would be made to lift as many regulatory deficits as possible so that the home could be rebuilt as quickly as possible. He concluded:
As servant leaders, when we see people with such determination, we need to do everything we can to help people serve our neighbors, serve our families, ease the regulatory environment, and make it easier for our families to rebuild and recover better. I recommend working with supervisors and people here.

Director Katherine Berger agreed that Altadena needed a more sensitive approach to restore its character, adding that the county had established relationships with qualified architects and created a “land bank” for families who might want to sell the land to developers amid mount pressure. She said:
Looking around these houses, you can't build that way anymore. One thing I've heard from the residents of Altadena is that they want to keep their character, their uniqueness and my commitment a bottom-up approach. Rather than telling the community what it can rebuild, we are aware that we have the best things related to architects here in Roun County, by giving the community the option and the ability to make those decisions, and many of them say, “We want to be part of our rebuilding efforts.
The supervisor realized that a versatile approach would not suit the Altadena when it comes to architecture, and emphasized that counties and cities work hard to maintain the historic character of the city. Burger also referenced the city's The history of red liningwhich helped it become a historic black neighbourhood above Pasadena. She concluded:
For those who are struggling to stay or not, we also want to bring together land banks and land trust. That way, we can see that when we move forward, especially when we see the rich history associated with the red line that has been made here, we are focused on maintaining and maintaining as we move forward. It is important to protect that history and actually build it with lessons learned.
Eaton Fire destroyed nearly 9,500 structures, expelled thousands, causing losses of an estimated $10 billion, and seriously damaged the local economy.
