Watch live: House Republican leaders give remarks amid spending battle

House Republican leaders are expected to make the remarks Wednesday after meeting privately as part of the party's efforts to avert a government shutdown.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) told The Hill that the decision to change the date for the partisan spending plan vote means Congress doesn't appear to be any closer to passing a stopgap budget bill before the Sept. 30 deadline.

The bill, which combines a six-week continuing resolution and a bill to require proof of citizenship to vote, appears destined for failure in the House. A vote on the bill is scheduled for later Wednesday, but several Republicans voiced their opposition to the measure last week, forcing Johnson to retract his initial vote.

But even if the bill passes, it is destined to die in the Senate, and senators are urging the speaker to change course and support a bill that could actually reach President Biden's desk and be signed into law.

The briefing will begin at 10 a.m. EDT.
