Watch live: White House holds briefing in wake of second Trump assassination attempt

Please note: this event has been postponed and is now scheduled to begin at 2pm EDT.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is scheduled to hold a press conference on Tuesday as the Biden administration continues to address security concerns raised by the second assassination attempt on former President Trump over the weekend.

Biden and Trump spoke by phone on Monday in what the White House described as “friendly” following an event on Sunday at the former president's golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla. The meeting also came after suspect Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested and charged with federal gun crimes, though Routh did not fire a shot at President Trump before fleeing the scene.

In comments to the media, Biden suggested there may be a need to step up Secret Service protection for the nominee.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also suggested funding for enhanced security for candidates could be included in a continuing resolution that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is urging lawmakers to pass before the Sept. 30 deadline.
