Investigation Into Possible Arson at Judge’s Home
In South Carolina, officials are looking into a potential arson incident after a judge’s waterfront mansion was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday. Local reports indicate this luxurious property was valued at a million dollars.
The identity of the homeowner wasn’t disclosed right away; however, later reports identified her as 69-year-old Judge Diane Schafer Goodstein. Her husband, Arnold Goodstein, 81, has a storied background, having served in both chambers of the state legislature. Interestingly, he was also a commissioner for the South Carolina Department of Transportation and was injured during a Tet offensive in Vietnam, where he received two bronze stars for heroism.
Firefighters from the St. Paul Fire District, alongside those from the Edisto Beach Fire Station, were called to tackle the flames at Edisto Island, which is about an hour southwest of Charleston. An official from the St. Paul Fire District noted the unique challenges the area posed, with limited water supplies and tight spaces. As a result, first responders resorted to using kayaks to rescue nearby residents who were trapped.
Reports suggest that Arnold Goodstein managed to escape through a window amid the blaze while the judge was outside walking their dog. Unfortunately, three people sustained injuries in the incident, and the couple has two adult children.
Authorities have shared images of the home engulfed in flames and smoke. A spokesperson from the state law enforcement, who is investigating the fire as a potential arson, has not responded to inquiries at this time.
