Watford has parted ways with Tom Cleverly as head coach following a 14th-place finish in the championship during their first full season.
Cleverly took over on a temporary basis in March 2024 and became the permanent head coach last summer. Unfortunately, the 35-year-old was dismissed after securing only five wins and earning just one point from his final five matches.
Sports Director Gianlu Kanani commented, “Tom is thankful for his time as head coach, as well as for all the contributions he has made to Watford as a player and staff member.
“However, we feel it’s time for a change, considering the potential of a young and talented team that could really benefit from this experience in the championship this season.”
Watford has seen rapid changes in leadership; since Nigel Pearson’s departure five years ago, the club has had nine different full-time managers. The season started on a hopeful note, with the team finishing sixth after defeating Portsmouth on Boxing Day, gaining momentum from previous victories.
Playing primarily as a midfielder, Cleverly has had an extensive career with clubs like England, Manchester United, and Everton. Watford provided him with his first senior coaching opportunity.
