Ryder Cup Returns to New York City Area for the First Time Since 1935

This weekend, the Ryder Cup is making its way back to the Metro area of New York City for the first time since 1935, taking place at Bethpage Black on Long Island. Teams from the USA and Europe are set to compete in this storied tournament.

The event is scheduled for September 17, 2024, and Bethpage Black is particularly known for its tough conditions, suited really for highly skilled golfers. Initially, this was intended to be the 2024 Ryder Cup, but due to the pandemic, the 2020 event was postponed, which altered the timeline for future tournaments.

This actually marks the second delay in Ryder Cup history; the first delay occurred in 2001 due to the September 11 attacks. So, it’s quite interesting to see how the Ryder Cup has come back after all these years.

Now, after nearly 12 years since the big announcement, golfers will tee off bright and early on Friday. NBC and Peacock will be streaming the events, providing ample coverage for fans.

The Ryder Cup began way back in 1927, featuring a competition primarily between the US and the UK, with Ireland as a participant. Over time, the US emerged as a dominant force. In 1979, Jack Nicklaus played a pivotal role in expanding the tournament to include all of Europe, and that, well, changed everything.

This expansion introduced legendary players like Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer, making Europe a serious contender. Since then, there have been 22 Ryder Cups, with Europe holding a 12-9-1 record during this period. Notably, they won the first three Ryder Cups after the expansion took place.

The tournament consists of a three-day match-play format, featuring five different sessions. On Friday and Saturday, there will be both four ball matches and alternative shot matches, split into morning and afternoon rounds. Sunday culminates in a one-on-one singles match involving all 24 players.

To clinch the Ryder Cup, a total of 14.5 points are needed out of 28 points. As Team Europe won the last event, they hold onto the trophy until 2027, making this year’s competition all the more significant.

Team USA, led by captain Keegan Bradley, boasts a lineup that includes Scotty Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, and more. Interestingly, although Bradley had the chance to choose himself, he ultimately opted out of that decision.

On the European side, captain Luke Donald has brought back a winning squad from 2023, but with Rasmus Hojgaard stepping in for his twin brother, Nikolai. The roster features stars like Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick, aiming to secure another victory.

Team Europe has the opportunity to break a pattern here; no team has managed to win consecutive Ryder Cups since Europe claimed three victories in a row from 2010 to 2014.
