Republicans Aim to Protect Medicaid for “Deserving” Individuals, Says Sen. Mark Wayne Marin

Senator Mark Wayne Marin of Oklahoma recently discussed upcoming changes to a House bill, referring to it as a “big, beautiful bill.” He noted that the Senate plans to adjust the initial framework provided to them.

“It’s like someone who has purchased a new home but still wants to add their personal touch. They’ll repaint and maybe even rearrange some parts of the interior. The basic structure is already there,” he explained.

Marin addressed concerns regarding Medicaid, particularly countering the Democrats’ assertions that Republicans are undermining the program, leading to coverage losses.

“We are not eliminating qualified Medicaid recipients. What we’re targeting is the waste and fraud—the parts that diminish the program,” he stated.

He added, “Under the Biden administration, around 6 million individuals have been added to Medicaid who shouldn’t be eligible. These include healthy individuals and even undocumented immigrants. They haven’t sought asylum, yet they’ve managed to qualify for Medicaid.”

“Many of these individuals have no significant health issues or addictions. They have no reasons preventing them from working. Medicaid was intended for those who are pregnant, children, and individuals who are critically ill and unable to work,” he continued.

Reflecting on rural healthcare, Marin stated, “Unfortunately, many who visit rural hospitals come from the countryside, which I understand well. I sympathize with them, but if they’re defrauding taxpayers by utilizing a system they don’t qualify for, then that’s unacceptable. Their presence strains the resources and undermines the system,” he remarked.

Marin emphasized, “They shouldn’t be in the system at all. We want patients who genuinely need care to access those services, not individuals misusing the system.” He pointed out the current waiting list of about 700,000 patients seeking Medicaid and professional care. “We can’t afford to waste resources on a scam when there are deserving individuals who need care,” he said.

“I appreciate Josh Hawley’s perspective on this, and I value Rick Scott’s expertise as he deeply understands the hospital system,” Marin concluded.
