Italian Prime Minister Criticizes Left’s Reaction to Kirk’s Assassination
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy has sharply criticized those on the political left who celebrated or downplayed the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. During an event for the socially conservative Union Di Centro Party in Rome, she emphasized the need for the Italian left to take responsibility for their role in fostering animosity toward political opponents.
Meloni has frequently been labeled a fascist or far-right by mainstream media, even though her leadership has been relatively moderate. She remarked to Il Giornale, “We are accused of political hatred by those who excuse Kirk’s murder.”
After Kirk’s death at a college debate event in Utah, social media platforms like Bluesky and TikTok were inundated with posts celebrating the event. Furthermore, left-wing media outlets quickly implied that Kirk’s “divisive” rhetoric contributed to his murder.
In response, Meloni praised Kirk for his courage in defending his beliefs, declaring that “in public, everyone was confident in their ideas, so anyone could challenge him.”
Referring to the left in Italy, she stated, “The atmosphere here is becoming untenable, and it’s time to denounce it. It’s unacceptable, dangerous, irresponsible, and contrary to the very essence of democracy.”
Meloni specifically called out remarks from leftist academic Piergiorgio Odifreddi, who suggested that there’s a significant difference in the moral legitimacy of targeting figures like Martin Luther King versus Kirk. In response, Meloni asked, “What does this renowned professor imply? Is he suggesting there are people who can be harmed based on their ideas?”
Similar to the U.S., Italy has been a hub for various anti-fascist movements. Notably, one of the inscriptions found on bullets linked to Kirk’s murder referred to “Bella Ciao,” a song associated with anti-Nazi resistance during World War II, which later gained popularity among antifa groups globally.
