The USDA is intensifying efforts against fraud within the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as Secretary Brook Rollins cautions offenders with the message, “we’re here for you.”
The USDA recently announced that its Special Investigations unit, in collaboration with local law enforcement, has been identifying those exploiting SNAP funds. A press release highlighted a troubling rise in EBT card fraud, with criminals using skimmers to illegally access benefits. The USDA also pointed out that international crime syndicates have become significantly involved in these operations.
John Walk, the deputy secretary of food, nutrition, and consumer services, remarked that this initiative is part of the most significant effort yet to combat EBT fraud in the history of the US Secret Service. He stated that “those who steal food from low-income Americans are merely acting in their own self-interest.”
He expressed further concern over the involvement of international organizations diverting resources meant for SNAP beneficiaries to support illegal activities.
One initiative monitored over 100 locations in California, resulting in numerous arrests and the recovery of substantial evidence. Yet, the operation is described as strategic, with enforcement actions taking place nationwide.
Chief Rollins declared, “The food stamp scams are now suspended. If you’re taking advantage of the generosity extended to struggling families and American taxpayers, we’re onto you.”
She added that under President Trump, the USDA is committed to restoring law and order and safeguarding taxpayer contributions.
In a formal communication accompanying the press release, Rollins reiterated that fraudulent activities involving food stamps will not be tolerated during the Trump administration.
She expressed gratitude towards the dedicated law enforcement officials working to ensure that federal benefits are properly allocated and safeguarded from criminal manipulation.
Rollins emphasized that the USDA is resolutely combating fraud and misuse of taxpayer dollars, ensuring that those eligible for benefits receive them.
The operation aligns with other initiatives from the Trump administration, such as the deportation of illegal immigrants involved in criminal activities. For instance, Jomar Lopez Meirreles, a Dominican national residing illegally in the US, confessed to illegally securing $213,000 in food stamp benefits from Rhode Island. Reports indicate that he submitted a fraudulent SNAP application during President Biden’s administration between September 2021 and November 2023.
Following his second term, President Trump directed federal agencies to cease taxpayer funding of illegal immigrants through SNAP, signing an executive order titled “End Open Border Taxpayer Subsidies.”
