Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas is embracing themes that resonate with populist sentiments as she campaigns for a Senate seat.
Speaking to a crowd in Houston, Crockett emphasized the need to reclaim identity, asserting, “This is about us… They try to act like we’re outsiders, but last time we checked, we weren’t colonizers.”
She made bold remarks regarding the historical treatment of her community, stating, “Last time I checked, they were taking us away from our homeland… It was the promise of America, which meant opportunity for all of us, and now the dreams of many are being shattered. They’re telling us we’re ‘less than.’ I’m here to tell you that we are ‘more than.’ Especially when we’re standing together.”
The emotional weight of her words drew connections to the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring impact.

Crockett is currently running for a statewide Senate seat in the very places she branded “racist.”
Crockett also talked about her friendship with entertainer Tyrese Gibson, recalling how he encouraged her to stay connected with her community. “So I have to say I love my brother Tyrese… There’s a lot of people who are really lacking courage in this moment,” she said, referencing their bond.
To energize her audience, she engaged them with a call-and-response exercise, asking, “Where are you?” focusing on their shared experiences.
Crockett’s background showcases her educational achievements, including graduating from St. Louis Country Day School and earning her Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston.
