We ‘Have a Problem’ with ‘Just Allowing Everyone in’

On Tuesday's NPR broadcast “Here and Now,” Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) answered a question about the president's humanitarian parole powers, one of the issues in Congress' immigration negotiations, saying: Stated. Just make it easier for everyone to get in. ”

Co-host Robin Young said: [relevant exchange begins around 2:00] “Now, let’s talk about humanitarian parole, which President Biden, like every other president before him, would allow to enter the United States in large numbers from countries like Haiti, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. Again, this isn't like an asylum seeker, but you can come in while you're going through what can be a very long process. Now, in the House, Republicans are saying this We know that they want to end humanitarian parole. We understand that in the current Senate negotiations, Republicans want to put strict limits on the number of people that the president can participate in. Where do you stand on this point, is this a Ukrainian or an Afghan?”

Gonzalez replied: But there is a problem with making it easy for everyone to get in. The fact is that more than 70% of the immigrants who arrive at our southern border will never qualify for asylum, most of them for economic reasons. [migrants]”

He then added that immigrants are needed to fill jobs, but the process must be orderly and that the credible fear standard for asylum is low.
