‘We Have the Israelis Right Where We Want Them’

“The Gaza-based Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, said:[W]Despite heavy losses to the terrorist group, Israel has declared that it has “put Israel where it wants to be” as international pressure mounts to prevent a victory over Israel.

of The Wall Street Journal report Sinwar, who is likely hiding in a tunnel in southern Gaza and surrounded by Israeli hostages as a human shield, said he was satisfied with the progress of the war, including civilian casualties.

of journal I got it:

Yahya Sinwar has been resisting pressure for cuts for months. Ceasefire and hostage agreement Hamas is at odds with Israel, and messages sent by the Gaza military leader to the intermediary suggest that the calculation behind his decision is that the more fighting and the more Palestinian civilian deaths, the better for him.

“We have put Israel exactly where we want it,” Sinwar said in a recent message to Hamas officials trying to broker a deal with their Qatari and Egyptian counterparts.

In a message to Hamas leaders in Doha, Sinwar cited civilian casualties in national liberation conflicts such as Algeria, where hundreds of thousands died for independence from France, saying “these are necessary sacrifices.”

Sinwar’s war goals are: journal He added that the aim is to ensure that Hamas survives and is ready to arm itself and resume terrorism.

Indeed, there is reason to believe his efforts are working. The United States has openly acknowledged its acceptance of Hamas’ ceasefire proposal, and on Monday the UN Security Council passed a resolution endorsing it. Hamas welcomed the resolution but did not explicitly agree, and said it would serve as the basis for future negotiations.

The resolution does not ask Hamas to disarm or give up power, or even guarantee the release of all hostages. But it does guarantee that Israel will withdraw from Gaza, which would make it harder for Israel to resume hostage war once the ceasefire goes into effect. Under the proposal, the initial six-week cessation of fighting would be extended for as long as negotiations continue, meaning Hamas could keep Israel in check by simply pretending to negotiate.

Israel estimates that around 15,000 Hamas terrorists have been killed in the conflict. Thousands of Palestinian civilians have also died. For Sinwar, journal They point out that this is a small price to pay for the goal of destroying Israel.
