‘We Have to End’ Birthright Citizenship

President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press” that birthright citizenship should be abolished.

Host Kristen Welker asked, “I'd like to ask you about your other promises on this topic. You promised on day one to abolish birthright citizenship. Is that still your plan?

Trump replied, “Of course I do.”

Welker said, “But the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, to quote you, says that every person born in the United States is a citizen. Can the President's actions circumvent the 14th Amendment?”

President Trump said, “We're going to have to make changes. Maybe we're going to have to go back to the people, but we're going to have to end it. With it. We’re the only ones there, you know?”

“Through administrative action?” Welker said.

President Trump said: “We are the only country that has it. Someone has set foot on our land, congratulations, you are now a citizen of the United States of America! Yes, it's ridiculous so I'll stop.”

“Through administrative action?” Welker said.

“Hopefully through executive action,” Trump said. “I was going to do it through executive action, but let's be honest, we have to solve the coronavirus first. We have to end it.” No need.”
