On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “The Andrea Mitchell Report,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke about the resolution the U.S. has submitted to the U.N. Security Council calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas following the release. said he was disappointed. She spoke of all the hostages held by Hamas, which she said was “a resolution that really went beyond anything we’ve ever done before.”
“We’re disappointed, Andrea,” Thomas-Greenfield said. “We felt we had a lot of determination, and it was a solution that far exceeded anything we’ve ever done before. We had 11 countries support the resolution, which called for an immediate ceasefire with the release of the hostages and the provision of additional humanitarian assistance to meet the urgent needs of the Palestinian people. There was no reason for China to veto that resolution, so we are very disappointed that once again the Council failed to act.”
She added, “The president has been very clear about our support for Israel’s right to self-defense. But also, his message is very clear. [Prime Minister] Prime Minister Netanyahu said he needed to consider how his actions would affect civilians on the ground in Rafah. We therefore hope that this resolution will support ongoing negotiations on the ground, provide an avenue for access to additional humanitarian assistance, and ensure the immediate release of hostages living in similarly harsh conditions. I thought this would provide a clue to a supportive ceasefire. It’s a very difficult situation in the hands of Hamas. ”
