On Friday's episode of HBO's “Real Time,” host Bill Maher argued that “too much time” is spent discussing assault weapons restrictions when it comes to America's gun violence problem, when in fact that's not the issue. “The problem is, we're a gun country. We love our guns. And that's not going to go away,” he said. But he thinks it's a good idea to hold parents of school shooters accountable.
Maher began by talking about the Georgia school shooting, saying, “Right now they're blaming the parents, and I think rightly so.”
In the ensuing discussion, National Review editor Rich Lawley argued that the focus on assault weapons was wrong because the definition was based on “external characteristics” and a handgun can kill just as many people as a rifle, pointing out that the Virginia Tech shooting was carried out with a handgun.
“I think that's true. We spend too much time talking about types of guns. The problem is, this is a gun country. We love our guns and that's not going to go away. But it seems reasonable to put the responsibility on parents. … This feels like progress to me.” [holding the] “It's the parents' fault.”
