In a portion of a Tuesday interview with CNN that was made public on Wednesday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said the Secret Service is “solely responsible for the design, execution and execution of the venue” for the rally, in response to a question about her earlier statement that local police were responsible for the building where an assassin attempted to shoot former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
CNN law enforcement reporter Whitney Wilde asked, “What do you mean when you say local law enforcement is responsible for that building?”
Cheatle responded, “The Secret Service respects local law enforcement and cannot perform its investigations or its security duties without them. In fact, in Pennsylvania, they were also handling the visit of the First Lady and the Vice President that same day. So, we understand the constraints they are under and, as I said, we cannot perform our duties without them. In that particular location, we shared areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is solely responsible for the design, implementation and execution of the site. What I wanted to emphasize is that we just shared areas of responsibility and they supported those areas of responsibility.”
