North Korea’s UN Representative Defends Nuclear Program
The North Korean representative at the UN General Assembly made headlines on Monday, asserting that the country would never abandon its nuclear weapons programs. This assertion came amid a discussion about the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, which Pyongyang described as peaceful, despite tensions.
Deputy Minister Kim Sung-Jong spoke at the culmination of the General Assembly’s “high-level discussions,” although the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un chose not to attend this year’s meeting in New York. In a noticeable absence, the Foreign Minister also opted out, instead attending events in Beijing. Interestingly, Kim’s interactions in New York included meetings with representatives from communist allies such as Cuba and Nicaragua.
During his speech, Kim criticized the United States and South Korea, blaming them for the ongoing tensions in the region. He even invoked the historical context of the Korean War, emphasizing a continuous cycle of conflict that dates back to 1950.
Kim expressed concerns about the presence of US nuclear capabilities and joint military exercises in South Korea. He lamented, “It’s hard to find a place like the Korean Peninsula where the world’s largest nuclear power engages in continuous military rehearsals.” He described these drills, which he claimed simulated nuclear combat scenarios against sovereign states, as a significant threat.
In response to regular military exercises conducted by the US and South Korea, which are intended as a deterrent against potential aggression from North Korea, Pyongyang has often resorted to threats. State media routinely disseminates warnings about invasion and nuclear strikes targeting major American cities.
Kim’s speech left no room for ambiguity regarding military preparedness. He argued that possessing nuclear weapons, deemed essential for national security, was integral to North Korea’s stance. “We will never abandon nuclear power as it represents our state sovereignty and existence,” he declared, reinforcing the regime’s commitment to its military capabilities.
The Deputy Minister echoed the sentiments of Kim Jong-un, who had previously emphasized the importance of increasing nuclear arsenals. State media reported that Kim Jong-un led a conference focusing on the need to boost nuclear production, labeling it a top priority. This narrative reinforced the idea that a strong military deterrent is synonymous with peace for North Korea.
Kim previously articulated similar viewpoints, reflecting on past meetings with former President Donald Trump. He noted that, despite fond memories of those encounters, they failed to alter North Korea’s policies regarding nuclear disarmament.
“We will never discard our nuclear weapons,” he reiterated firmly, indicating no willingness to negotiate with what he termed a hostile America. Off-topic discussions included remarks on Israel’s actions against Hamas, where he condemned such actions while suggesting they overshadow historical events of great cruelty.
Additionally, North Korea has been implicated in the provision of support and weaponry to groups involved in various conflicts, including allegations of its involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine, where thousands of North Korean personnel have reportedly joined Russian forces.
Kim concluded with a call for a more respectful international approach, urging the UN to adhere to principles of sovereignty and non-interference in domestic matters.
