Minnesota Attorney General’s Remarks Amid Recent Violence

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison addressed the Democratic National Committee (DNC) summer meeting in Minneapolis, making a firm commitment to pursue legal actions against former President Donald Trump. He emphasized that his office wouldn’t allow transgender individuals to become scapegoats, especially in light of recent violence.

During his speech, Ellison declared, “We are going to sue him over 44 more cases, and yes, we are affirming the rights of the trans community.” His comments came shortly before a tragic shooting incident in the city.

Just two days later, on August 27, a shooter identified as Robert Westman—who was biologically male but transitioned and identified as a woman at 17—opened fire at Minneapolis’ Announcement Catholic School. Authorities reported that the gunman used various firearms, including pistols and rifles, during the attack, which resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 17 others before the shooter took his own life.

In the aftermath, FBI officials announced that the shooting is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime against Catholics. The shooter’s manifesto reportedly included images of weapons along with anti-Trump sentiments, including a message to “kill Donald Trump.”

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reacted to the incident by calling for stricter gun control measures, stating that “students and teachers shouldn’t live in fear” just by returning to school. This was voiced before full details about the firearms used were released.

Actress Mia Farrow later criticized Republican lawmakers and the National Rifle Association (NRA), blaming them for what she termed “bribery” from gun manufacturers. Her comments followed the confirmation that the shooter had expressed anti-Trump and anti-Christian views. Other Democrats, including Senator Amy Klobuchar and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, quickly aligned with the call for enhanced gun laws. In response to the tragedy, former President Trump ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff until August 31 in honor of the victims.

Ellison’s statements were part of a broader strategy session for the party held in Minneapolis, which began with an acknowledgment of the Dakota Oyate as former custodians of the land.

Additionally, a nonprofit group linked to billionaire George Soros urged Democrats to shift their focus from “immigrant crime” and “carjacking” to more pressing issues such as homelessness and mental health. The organization, which has reportedly received substantial funding from Soros for social initiatives, called for this strategic pivot in the Democratic narrative.
