We Will Receive Strong Bipartisan Backing to Prevent Any Military Action in Greenland

Sen. Tim Kaine Discusses Bipartisan Support Against Military Action in Greenland

On CBS’ “Face the Nation” this past Sunday, Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, expressed confidence in “overwhelming bipartisan support” within Congress to block any military actions by President Donald Trump concerning Greenland.

Here’s a portion of the conversation:

MARGARET BRENNAN: President Trump mentioned that he shouldn’t be re-elected due to demands for parliamentary reviews. You mentioned Greenland, which is under Denmark’s significant control, and Denmark is a NATO ally. It seems world leaders are taking Trump’s remarks very seriously. The Danish Prime Minister has indicated that following through on those statements could jeopardize the NATO alliance. Just last Friday, Trump suggested wanting to acquire Greenland either “the easy way” or “the hard way.” Is there any way to prevent a president from initiating what might sound like military action?

KAINE: Margaret, I believe that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress would intervene. This would be a disaster. It’s not merely about “America First.” It could lead to not just the end of NATO, but to America standing alone. If we disregard a long-term ally like Denmark, which possesses military capabilities, we risk isolating the U.S. on the world stage. I’ve had discussions with some Republican colleagues, and they’re apprehensive about Trump’s actions in Venezuela. They notice threats directed at foreign nations. I can assure you: we will push for a Senate vote to prohibit any American military involvement in Greenland and Denmark. This would likely garner significant bipartisan backing, making it unwise for the president to even consider such proposals. We’re committed to collaborating with Denmark as an allied sovereign nation, and we won’t treat them as adversaries.
