Rep. Becca Balint (R-Vt.) faced backlash following President Trump’s immigration policy stance, which implied that Vermonters might be left without essential workers.

In light of inquiries regarding immigration in the U.S., Balint mentioned a recent incident where she was unexpectedly referred to as “crude oil” during a meeting in Newport, Virginia.

“Our economy is heavily reliant on immigration and the labor of immigrants,” Balint expressed. “We need to reach a consensus that sees this not just as a political issue, but as something critical for our country’s future.”

“I would be, you know, quite surprised right now if there were no avenues for people to come here and find work or build homes,” she added.

“We want to ensure that our discussions in Congress are mature,” continued Vermont’s lone representative.

In response, Vermont Republican Chairman Paul Dame has called for Balint to apologize to the state’s immigrant community for her “disturbing” comments.

“Rep. Balint should not only apologize for her poor language but also for her troubling beliefs that the primary role of immigration is to fulfill menial labor under the dignity of others,” Dame stated.

“These remarks reveal a concerning level of disrespect toward individuals who come here seeking freedom and better lives,” he further argued.

Dame emphasized that immigrants in Vermont contribute significantly, saying they hold crucial roles in high-tech industries and healthcare, enriching the state’s economy.

“It’s disappointing to see Rep. Balint reduce hard-working legal immigrants to mere ‘A-Wipers,'” Dame remarked. “She owes them and all of Vermont an apology for such an ungracious perspective.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) joined the criticism, asserting that Balint’s comments indicate support for “open borders.”

“While President Trump talks about deporting illegal immigrants, Vermont Democrat Becca Balint has claimed there’s no one to handle our basic needs. The Democrats are always pushing for open borders,” the NRCC stated.

Mark Coaster, a GOP contender for the 2026 election in Vermont’s larger district, also voiced his opinion, stating, “We all encounter mishaps in our lives, but Vermonters shouldn’t need outsiders to clean up our mess.”

Balint’s office did not provide any comments when approached for a response.
