Golden Visas Gain Popularity Among Wealthy Americans

As the appeal of “golden” visas grows, surprising destinations are catching the attention of affluent Americans in search of alternative residencies.

Regions in Latin America and Asia are now entering the spotlight. Mo Bennis, who serves as an associate vice president at Arton Capital, a global financial advisory firm, mentioned that more Americans are shifting their focus away from Europe to pursue secondary citizenship options.

New Destinations Expand Golden Visa Opportunities

Traditionally, Europe has been a go-to for Americans looking for a “Plan B” passport. Burton noted countries like Portugal, Malta, and Greece have been popular for years. However, he now emphasizes that “Latin America is on the rise.” Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay, in particular, are attracting record numbers of U.S. applicants due to their affordability and flexibility.

Interestingly, there has been a staggering 660% increase in U.S. citizens seeking residency in Costa Rica.

Moreover, Venice, a Canada-based firm, has noticed a significant uptick in interest toward Asia as well. “Thailand and Singapore are becoming key relocation spots thanks to their business-friendly environments, healthcare services, and overall lifestyle advantages,” he said.

Many Americans see a second residence or citizenship as a vital form of security amid uncertainties.

Nevertheless, critics point out that such visa programs risk favoring the wealthy and may inflate local housing prices. Surprisingly, some African nations are also attracting wealthy Americans. The newly launched “Citizenship Program” in Botswana reported that about 13% of inquiries came from U.S. citizens.

Experts observe a clear trend: Americans are exploring options beyond Europe, looking into Latin America, Asia, and now Africa, as they aim to diversify their opportunities for themselves and their families.

This seems to reflect a deep desire among Americans for a broader array of choices, which is perhaps more evident than ever.
