Discounts for the Wealthy: The Private Jet Seat Exchange

Even billionaires appreciate a good deal. A unique WhatsApp group, exclusively for the wealthy, facilitates buying and selling private jet seats on popular routes. These include journeys from New York to Palm Beach, Aspen to Southern California, and Texas to Cabo, among other sought-after destinations.

Peter Minikes, who operates the Priority 1 jet from a private jet charter company, describes how members post in the group, saying things like, “Hey, I’m heading to Aspen on August 1st. Who wants to share a flight?”

Nick Molina, a 57-year-old investor from Key Biscayne, Florida, found himself chatting in the American Express Centurion lounge at LaGuardia Airport. During a conversation about flight delays, he learned about the WhatsApp group and got an invitation to join.

Another group member, Enrico Skuldha, 56, sold his jet last year but still flies privately. Initially, he was hesitant about sharing a plane with strangers. However, after a few outings in the group, he realized that most people were quite similar.

Participants turn to these groups for various reasons—primarily to avoid long TSA lines, baggage fees, and intrusive security scans. Kaden Green, a 20-year-old jet broker, is known for starting his own chat focused on private flights between Europe and the U.S.

Investor Arik Kislin has launched a “Turkish private jet group” tailored for Turkish travelers heading to the Caicos Islands. He mentioned the disparity in costs, noting, “I get that you might not want to pay $25,000 to $30,000 for a flight to New York, but spending three or four thousand feels more reasonable.”

It’s important to note that aircraft operators generally need certification under Part 135 regulations. Aviation attorney Steve Tucker highlights that violating these rules could result in civil penalties. The FAA has begun to keep an eye on social media platforms where individuals sell jet seats for profit.
