A favorable life insurance policy for a couple’s teenage daughter was changed just days before her father murdered his family and then committed suicide. The Boston Globe reported..

When Teena Kamal dies, her husband Rakesh “Rick” Kamal will inherit $1.25 million, and their 18-year-old daughter Ariana will inherit the property.

On December 24, the policy was changed: Rakesh and Ariana broke up. InheritanceAccording to local newspapers, Rakesh’s younger brother Manoj Kamal joined the delegation.

Four days later, on December 28, Rakesh, Teena and Ariana were found dead in their $4 million mansion in Dover, Massachusetts, with the district attorney saying that Rakesh had carried out a murder-suicide.

After the Kamals’ deaths, the family discovered Rakesh’s massive debts, including a mortgage, a six-figure loan from family members, and “ill-fated” business deals, according to the Boston Globe. Rakesh had previously worked as a software developer and entrepreneur. Boston 25 reported.

Now, according to the Globe, Rakesh and Teena’s families are battling over the life insurance policy.

What happens next in one of the most polarizing murder cases?

Rakesh’s brother, Manoj, found his family dead at their home in the Boston suburb of Dover and has filed a lawsuit seeking compensation.

However, Teena’s brother, Sandeep Bedi, had “concerns” and asked the court to intervene, the Boston Globe reported.

In addition to the tragic death, a family feud over money is likely to escalate into a lengthy legal battle.

J. Michael Young, a Texas attorney who specializes in life insurance, told The Globe that this is “not uncommon.”

“This is obscene and heartbreaking, but it’s not uncommon,” he told the paper. “When a million dollars is hanging in the balance, it’s not uncommon for fights to break out.”

The Globe spoke with insurance claims lawyer George Thompson, who explained the possible arguments on both sides.

Manoj will likely claim that he is the beneficiary and refer to official documents.

The Globe said the allegations must be considered in light of an affidavit already filed by Teena’s family in probate court alleging that Rakesh had borrowed “substantial” sums of money from his brother.

Thompson said they will allege Teena’s signature was forged and will point to affidavits, time of death and changes to life insurance policies.
