Box Office Update
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The horror film “Weapons” continues to dominate the box office, maintaining its top position for a second weekend in a row, outperforming releases like “Freakier Friday” and “Nobody 2.”
Directed by Zach Cregger, “Weapons” earned $25 million across 3,450 North American theaters, a decrease of 43% from its opening weekend. The film’s strong reviews and buzz on social media have clearly helped draw in audiences.
“Freakier Friday,” meanwhile, took second place, bringing in $14.5 million during its opening weekend, but couldn’t outmatch “Weapons.” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at ComScore, commented on the competitive nature of late summer film performances.
Both “Weapons” and “Freakier Friday” surpassed “Nobody 2,” which is an R-rated sequel. The film, led by Bob Odenkirk, made $9.25 million from 3,260 theaters on its debut weekend.
Dergarabedian noted the difficulty in comparison due to last year’s box office successes, like “Deadpool” and the horror sci-fi “Alien: Romulus.” He mentioned that while summer ticket sales might not reach the $4 billion mark this year, the variety in films available is certainly appealing to a wide audience.
“I can’t think of any genre or demographic that isn’t resonating with these movies,” he said. “It’s a really eclectic mix that attracts different viewers.”
“Nobody 2,” following up on the first film “Nobody,” released in 2021, features Odenkirk’s character Hutch Mansell, who, after a seemingly quiet life, faces off against corruption in his town.
Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal Pictures, expressed optimism about the film’s positive audience reception, indicated by an 89% score and a B+ Cinemascore, suggesting it may have a sustained presence at the box office.
In fourth place, “Fantastic Four: First Step” earned $8.8 million after a strong initial opening weekend of $118 million, though it has struggled recently.
The sequel “The Bad Guys 2” secured the fifth spot, earning $7.5 million in its third weekend.
Dergarabedian also pointed out that international films are making an impact this weekend, with the Indian action thriller “Coolie” debuting in tenth place and “War 2” coming in at eleventh.
