'Weapons' stays at number one in the weekend box office, outpacing the new release 'Nobody 2'

LOS ANGELES – The horror film “Weapons” dominated the box office once again, maintaining its top position in its second weekend, outperforming “Freakier Friday” and newcomer “Nobody 2.”

Directed by Zach Cregger, “Weapons” garnered $25 million from 3,450 theaters across North America, seeing a 43% drop from its opening weekend. The film’s solid audience feedback and social media buzz played a significant role in drawing in viewers.

“Freakier Friday” came in second, earning $14.5 million domestically, a notable drop in its fight against “Weapons.” According to Paul Delgalavedian, a senior media analyst at ComScore, a film’s ability to remain in a strong position on late weekends can significantly affect its longevity in theaters.

Both “Weapons” and “Freakier Friday” outperformed “Nobody 2,” which, as a sequel to an earlier action film, brought in $9.25 million from 3,260 North American theaters during its debut.

Dergarabedian noted that comparisons to past August performances can be tricky. He pointed out that films like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” last year had set a high bar.

While he doesn’t think this summer will hit the $4 billion mark in ticket sales, he feels there is a variety of films for audiences. “I can’t think of any genres or groups not represented in these releases,” he remarked, highlighting the diverse film offerings.

The sequel “Nobody 2” continues the story of Hutch Mansell, played by Bob Odenkirk, who was an assassin turned good guy in the original film released in 2021. It depicts how a seemingly mild-mannered figure confronts corruption in his town.

In fourth place, “Fantastic Four: First Step” earned $8.8 million, a disappointing follow-up after its impressive $118 million debut.

“The Bad Guys 2,” another sequel, took fifth place with $7.5 million in its third weekend.

Dergarabedian also noted the impressive impact of international films in the top rankings this weekend, with the Indian action thriller “Coolie” debuting in 10th place and another Indian film, “War 2,” in 11th.
