2026 World Cup Final Concerns Over Heat

FIFA is set to kick off the 2026 World Cup final at 3 PM on July 19, 2026, despite rising worries about heat conditions highlighted during this year’s Club World Cup.

In an interview, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy emphasized that the event’s timing, particularly in the summer, is a known factor, suggesting that managing these conditions is part of the territory.

FifPro, the worldwide players’ union, is advocating for FIFA to reconsider schedules due to heat issues. They have flagged some stadiums, particularly in Kansas City, Miami, and Monterrey, as “very high risks.” They also categorize MetLife Stadium as a “high-risk” site, with temperatures in New Jersey hitting the 90s recently.

“The heat was definitely a concern during the tournament,” Murphy mentioned to Athletic. “I think we handle it well in New Jersey. If you’re in North America from the start of summer to early summer with late afternoon games, it’s just something you have to deal with. We’ll find a way to manage,” he added.

This weekend’s Club World Cup Quarter Final, along with the upcoming semifinals and finals, will serve as a preview for next summer when the World Cup arrives in North America. The forecast shows temperatures could climb to 85 degrees in New Jersey on Saturday during a match between Real Madrid and Dortmund.

Alex Phillips mentioned to reporters that FIFA might adopt a more flexible approach, but acknowledged that there are limits to what the players’ union can accomplish.

Lastly, while FIFA is making efforts to mitigate heat concerns—like providing additional water and towels around the pitch—Phillips noted that “we can only apply informal pressure and present good arguments. There really isn’t a way to enforce these changes.”

Indeed, FIFA’s approach has evolved, adapting based on insights from previous events, which, perhaps, indicates a willingness to collaborate on safety measures.
