Wedding anniversary gone awry puts wife, mother on defensive as Reddit users react

The woman who shared her experience of a 10-year wedding anniversary gone awry received little sympathy from other Reddit users, with one commenter calling the situation “toxic” and most blaming her husband for a lack of communication and consideration.

Her post received more than 5,000 responses within 24 hours, with almost 1,000 comments.

The woman said she was 37 years old and married to her husband, 38, and that the couple’s 10th wedding anniversary was last week. (She did not disclose her location.)

“I took today off. [from] I tried to spend time with him but it just didn’t happen,” she said.

“My husband had also been paged the day before, so he knew it was the day off,” she said.

The woman continued, “On our anniversary I woke up to a present sitting on the night table. It wasn’t wrapped, but I really liked the present so I didn’t mind.”

She continued, “After I dropped my eight-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl off at the bus stop, I went home and made him breakfast. I brought it to his bed and he was still asleep. Everything was fine. I just ate it.”

“I asked her if she had any plans for the day and she said, ‘I’m going to relax.'”

She continued, “My husband woke up around 9am, said ‘Happy Anniversary’ and went downstairs and made himself breakfast.”

“I asked him if he had any plans that day and he replied, ‘To relax,'” the woman said.

She added: “I wanted to go to a restaurant or see a movie or at least do something just for the two of us, and he said no. I was a little disappointed at the time, but I accepted his answer.”

About 20 minutes later, she was dressed and had her head[ed] I went out and enjoyed a little treat for myself, like going to the spa and shopping.”

The woman said that when she returned home around 6pm, her husband “brought up the fact that I was with the children and had left by the time they went to bed and asked why I had done so.”

She said: “I told him that it wouldn’t be a problem for me to spend time alone, since it’s not what he wants for me to do nothing all day and he’s not interested in spending time with me.”

“He went quiet after that. We’ve spoken since then but I’m posting here,” the woman wrote. [on Reddit] To find out if my past actions were stupid or not.”

She asked others if she was “wrong” to leave her husband and kids at home after he cancelled our anniversary.

“Where’s his present? Did you buy him anything?”

In a response post that has since garnered nearly 11,000 “upvotes,” another Reddit user made a series of direct comments to the woman.

This person said that her husband was ” [a–hole] You asked him for something and he said no, so you became AH for a few reasons.”

The commenter continued: “Where’s his gift? Did you buy him anything?”

Also, “If he makes breakfast while he’s asleep and you eat it, it’s not your problem because he made the breakfast.”

The same commenter addressed the woman directly, saying, “You’ve been completely out of touch. You left him all alone on your anniversary. If spending time together was really your goal, you should have done that. You wanted to be pampered.”

The commenter concluded his assessment with: “This post is [as] “It’s my husband’s job to plan our anniversary, and it’s my job to enjoy it.”

“You know that the only basis of a good marriage is communication.”

Another person on the platform said: “Your husband was called out the day before. [in] Medicine. Calling the shot. The next day I just want to rest.”

This same person pointed out, “You never planned anything for or with him, you expected him to pamper you, and then you just walked away.”

“This is harmful,” the person added.

Another commenter attempted to teach the poster some relationship basics.

“You’ve been married for 10 years. You know that the only basis of a good marriage is communication. If your husband wants to stay home and you want to go out, that’s fine. But you should have told him you were going out.”

Yet another was more blunt than the others: “I’m amazed you made it to your 10th anniversary when neither of you know how to communicate.”
